The Applied Research Laboratories performs research in the fields of physics and information science as a Department of Defense University-Affiliated Research Center (UARC).  Jacobs was responsible for the project of a 3 story building adjacent to the existing facility, housing laboratories and supporting spaces.

As the department promotes sponsored research, creating an inviting impression was paramount. The lobby was proposed as a "Brainstorm Area", where groups of researchers could congregate before and in between meetings to put ideas on the whiteboard. In order to create visual identity and wayfinding signage along the long lab corridors, flooring finishes and vertical panels were applied as visual cues. Striped gray and blue carpeting planks lead the way through the lobby and the main conference room, bleeding into it and creating a dynamic connection between the two spaces. Once inside of the lab space, gray and graphite colored vinyl floor planks are blended at the Break Room and Elevator Lobby areas.  Blue sections and Wooden panels are applied on walls signifying points of gathering and rest.
