IDENTIKIT - TRACES OF JAZZ, BLUES, AND ROCK&ROLL
Identikit enables the act of place making through live music. It is rooted in the belief that music needs a place to be heard although the increasing usage of portable devices. Identikit is a Music Hall located on the Third Ward, Houston. It is inspired by the musical heritage of the area, playing tribute to artists like Lightin Hopkins. Three old friends (Jazz, Blues, and Rock & Roll) are alive inside of Identikit. They wonder around the unexpected spaces and alleys, bringing diverse people together in the name of musical passion. The integration to the neighborhood is achieved by both program and architectural form. The program includes a school of music, offering spaces that are opened over the day, reviving a tradition in the neighborhood called “Blue Mondays” (jam sections opened to the public from mornings to evenings).
A Music Hall is located on the 3rd floor, being a display of activity that animated the neighborhood. Restaurants in form of Kiosks and stores are located on a dispersed ground floor. In order to create an acoustically controlled outdoor space, walls and ceilings are treated with acoustic absorbent materials, diffusers, and clouds. The idea is to provide a space that can host multiple artists and activities at the same time on this central area. The project aims to create a complex soundscape, where users can walk through the complex and enjoy different types of performances on the same place. Identikit desires to be part of a circuit of events on the neighborhood, integrating old and new generations of music lovers.
